Agriculture driving deforestation in Tanzania, threatening climate and ecosystems.
Agriculture is the main cause of deforestation in Tanzania, not charcoal production as previously thought. Researchers studied 119 deforested areas and found that crop cultivation was the most common driver, followed by livestock grazing and charcoal production. Most deforestation events involved multiple factors, with fire present in many plots. Stakeholder interviews confirmed agriculture as the primary driver in 81% of cases. This highlights the need for better coordination between different sectors to reduce deforestation in Tanzania.
