Novel wheat alleles improve quality traits in Spanish durum landraces.
Spanish durum wheat landraces were studied to find new genetic variations related to wheat quality. By analyzing the protein profiles of 116 landraces, researchers identified six new glutenin alleles and rare alleles linked to improved wheat quality. Some landraces showed promising gluten quality properties, making them suitable for specialized food markets. The study also revealed potential interactions between specific genetic combinations that influence wheat quality traits. Further research is needed to confirm the benefits of the novel genetic variations on wheat quality.
