Rare fish species in Peretorugbene River highlight need for conservation efforts.
The researchers studied the fish community in Peretorugbene River, Nigeria for 8 months. They found a total of 32 fish species belonging to 14 orders and 22 families. The most diverse families were Cichlidae and Mormyridae. Fish diversity was highest in November 2017 and lowest in June 2018. No single species dominated the community. Seven rare fish species were identified. The most abundant families were Clupeidae, Palaemonidae, and Physalidae. Proper management and protection of the river are recommended to sustain the fishery.
