Remnant coal pillars mined to fuel energy demands, boosting resource recovery
Researchers simulated the recovery of upper coal pillars while mining a close lower panel using a method called longwall top coal caving. They studied a case where coal pillars were left unrecovered due to historical reasons. The study found that the stability of the roof strata depends on the stability of these coal pillars. The stress relief of a coal pillar enhances its ability to cave in, which is important for successful mining operations.
