Coastal cities facing urgent need for costly erosion management solutions.
Coastal erosion in Cartagena, Colombia was studied to assess the risks and guide management decisions. The researchers evaluated 32.6 km of shoreline using various factors like wave height, storm surge, and urbanization. They found that over-reliance on shore-hardening structures and over-development have increased the risk of erosion. To manage this, they suggest increasing buffer zones, updating building codes, and using beach nourishment. Rural areas have more time to adopt stricter measures like development bans and ecosystem management. These solutions will be costly, so government plans for financing are necessary.
