Toxic Runoff from Roads Polluting Waterways, Threatening Public Health
Artificial rain was used to test the pollution in road runoff on S306. Different rain intensities were studied, showing that road runoff contains high levels of suspended solids and COD. The pollution in road runoff comes from various sources and is complex, but the main pollutants are suspended solids and COD. The concentration of pollutants decreases as the rainfall continues, as initial runoff washes away most of the pollutants on the road surface.
