A system was created to evaluate how well someone operates a hydraulic excavator using a remote-controlled excavator and virtual reality. The remote-controlled excavator was modified to mimic a real excavator, and data was collected during excavation work. The skill of operating the system was assessed by calculating various indices from the data. The same indices were calculated for a real excavator, and it was found that there is a strong correlation between the indices of the remote-controlled excavator and the real one.
