A study from 2008 to 2015 found that the amount of nutrients in the water, especially the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus, is linked to when and where the blooms happen. The blooms mostly occur after the rainy season. Tides help spread the blooms, and rainy weather affects how many nutrients are available for the algae.
