Rising inequality boosts EU regime evaluations, shifting trust from national to supranational level.
Rising inequality in European countries makes people view the EU more positively. This happens because when national democracies face problems due to inequality, citizens start to trust the EU more. They do this by shifting their hopes and expectations from their own country to the EU. A study looked at trust in national and European parliaments in 27 countries over 14 years and found evidence to support this idea. The more unequal a country is, the more likely its citizens are to see the EU in a better light.
