Soil erosion threatens sustainability of Ghana's Pra River Basin.
The study used models and GIS to estimate soil erosion and sediment in the Pra River Basin in Ghana. They found that the basin has an annual soil erosion of 1.28 million tons and an average sediment yield of 2.70 tons per hectare per year. Around 21.3% of the basin is at risk of severe erosion. The Lower Ofin sub-basin has the highest erosion rate. The models showed that different land use types have varying erosion rates. The study shows that using these models with GIS is a cost-effective way to estimate soil erosion and sediment yield in river basins, which can help in planning and managing natural resources for sustainable development.
