Landscape changes transform ecosystem services, with scale-dependent tradeoffs.
In a study in China's Taihu Lake Basin, researchers looked at how different aspects of the land affect things like clean water, air quality, and food production. They used data and models to see how landscape features impact these services in the area. The study showed that most ecosystem services improved between 2005 and 2015. They also found that the relationships between land characteristics and ecosystem services varied depending on the scale they looked at - from entire counties down to smaller areas. This means that changes in the land can have different effects on different services, and these effects can change depending on how big or small an area you're looking at. Planners and managers should think about these factors to manage landscapes well and improve services without causing problems in other areas.
