The article compares Old Institutional Economics (OIE) and New Institutional Economics (NIE), which criticize mainstream economics. OIE emerged in the US and challenged neoclassical economics, while NIE shares similarities with it. The authors explore the origins of OIE and the differences between OIE and NIE.
