Groundwater recharge in Turkey aquifer reveals sustainable water supply potential.
Groundwater recharge estimation is crucial for understanding water availability in aquifers. A study in Western Anatolia, Turkey, used a GIS-integrated method to calculate groundwater recharge in the Alaşehir alluvial aquifer. By analyzing water level fluctuations in monitoring wells, researchers found that the aquifer receives 187 hm3 of recharge annually. This recharge comes from sources like precipitation, surface water leakage, and irrigation. The study shows that estimating groundwater recharge in surficial aquifers, like the Alaşehir aquifer, is feasible using this method.
