Nigeria's Lack of Trade Policy Leaves Economy in Quandary of Negotiations
Nigeria is part of three economic integration agreements but lacks a clear national trade policy to guide its decisions. This has left the country unsure of what steps to take next. Despite being involved in the negotiation processes, Nigeria has delayed making final decisions by asking for more consultations. The agreements include the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)-Common Trade Policy (CTP), an economic partnership agreement (EPA) with the European Union (EU), and the African Economic Community (AEC) with African Union (AU) Members. Nigeria's lack of a clear plan for trade negotiations has put the country in a difficult situation.
