Agricultural encroachment leads to drastic marsh loss in Small Sanjiang Plain.
A study tracked changes in marshes in the Small Sanjiang Plain from 1965 to 2015 using satellite data. The marsh area decreased by over 50% during this time, mostly turning into paddy fields and dry farmland due to human activities. Marsh fragmentation worsened over the decades, with human actions being the main cause of these changes. This research helps us understand how wetlands have evolved and supports efforts to conserve and manage them better in the future.
