Performance management may not always boost employee motivation as expected. However, this study found that leadership style plays a crucial role in enhancing motivation. Transformational leadership positively impacts motivation, while transactional leadership does not. Interestingly, transactional leadership can enhance the motivational effect of performance management. This suggests that managers should balance both leadership styles to effectively motivate employees in the performance-driven workplace.
