Blue-Green Algae Thrive in Mixotrophic Conditions, Paving the Way for Sustainable Growth
Spirulina platensis can grow using glucose in the dark and light, either by itself or with photosynthesis. The cell concentration in mixed cultures matches the sum of autotrophic and heterotrophic cultures. This shows that photosynthesis and glucose metabolism work independently in mixed growth. Heterotrophic and aerobic growth have been seen in multiple strains of blue-green algae.
