Children's Reputation Concerns Sway Giving to Both Ingroup and Outgroup
Children aged 5 to 9, just like adults, care about their reputation when sharing with both kids from their group and those from outside the group. A study of 164 kids and 80 adults showed that even when watched, people are not more concerned about how others see their giving to outsiders compared to those within their group. Kids were more generous when someone was watching, but adults weren't affected in the same way. Interestingly, kids think giving within their own group is nicer, while grown-ups see giving to outsiders as kinder when compared. This is the first time it's been shown that kids consider their reputation when sharing with both group members and outsiders, and they view giving to their own group as nicer, unlike adults who prefer giving to outsiders.
