Increasing the number of visas available to potential migrants can reduce unauthorized immigration from Mexico to the U.S. Legal entry bans for deported individuals are not effective with current legal immigration rates, but increased legalization rates would deter unauthorized immigration. A temporary work visa program would have similar deterrent effects as permanent legalization without causing a large increase in the total number of migrants in the U.S.
