The article discusses using local waste materials for energy production in Finland. Researchers studied two cases where waste-derived fuel was used in small-scale energy plants. In one case, a district heating boiler successfully used waste fuel with low emissions. In the other case, waste from a specific area was used in a new heating plant. The findings show that using waste for energy can increase waste management fees but can be cost-effective if savings on heat purchase or selling heat to a district heating network are considered.
