New study reveals distinct subpopulations of authoritarian leaders and followers.
The study identified two types of authoritarian leaders and followers in New Zealand. Most people showed moderate levels of right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation. However, a small group displayed high social dominance but low authoritarianism, while another group showed high authoritarianism but low social dominance. Authoritarian leaders were less concerned about human rights and the environment but supported same-sex marriage. Authoritarian followers were against same-sex marriage but strongly supported human rights. These findings show that there are distinct subpopulations in society with different tendencies towards seeking dominance or following authoritarian leaders.
