Dimmer Roads Ahead: Lighting Designs Underestimate Darkness on Subsidiary Streets
The study looked at how to measure the brightness of lights on smaller roads. They found that using the median (middle value) is better than the average (usual value) because the brightness levels are not evenly spread out. Even though the median is lower than the average, they are closely related. Design guidelines should specify whether to use the average or median brightness, not just say "average".
