Biocrust reduces soil erosion by up to 95% during heavy rainfall.
Biological soil crusts on slopes can reduce runoff and soil loss. A study found that these crusts slow down the initial runoff and decrease sediment by 21%-78% and 77%-95%, respectively. Rainfall intensity affects erosion on these slopes mainly by influencing runoff. At higher rainfall intensities above 1.5 mm·min-1, the ability of biocrusts to reduce runoff and soil loss decreases. This research provides a foundation for modeling runoff and soil loss on biocrust-covered slopes during rainfall.
