Three Gorges Project alters river flow, reduces erosion and deposition.
The Three Gorges Project changed how sediment and water flow in the middle Yangtze River. By studying the river bed in the Yaojian reach, researchers found that high sediment transport keeps the main flow in the North Branch, while low sediment transport keeps it in the South Branch. The main branch won't change soon due to low sediment. After the project, flood recession sped up and erosion decreased by 11.9% in 2010, with flood season deposition dropping by 56.4%.
