Carrot cultivation's environmental impact varies by packaging size, with smaller trays having greater impact.
In a study assessing the environmental impact of carrot production, researchers aimed to figure out the effects of growing and packaging 1 kg of carrots in different ways. They gathered data from farmers and processors and used a method called Life Cycle Assessment to calculate these impacts. The results showed that smaller-sized carrot trays had a bigger environmental impact due to packaging, while larger formats were most impacted by field cultivation. Interestingly, transportation from Mesola had a greater impact than from Sicily, mainly because the transportation from Sicily was more efficiently loaded. Overall, carrots' environmental impacts varied based on how they were grown and packaged, with packaging and cultivation phases being the most significant contributors to the impacts measured.
