Toxic Streams Threaten Atlanta's Urban Communities, Exposing Residents to Dangerous Pollutants
The study looked at how urbanization affects stream water quality in Atlanta, Georgia. Researchers monitored water quality at 21 stations from 2003 to 2007, finding that most samples had higher levels of pollutants compared to nearby streams. Fecal coliform bacteria levels exceeded water quality standards, and high chloride levels were linked to sewer overflows and deicing salt runoff. One stream had low pH and high metal concentrations from an alum-manufacturing plant. Trace metals from impervious surfaces also exceeded water quality standards. Overall, urbanization has a significant impact on stream water quality in Atlanta.
