The COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, China is caused by a coronavirus closely related to the SARS virus from 2002. Both viruses come from bats, with a possible intermediate animal host like snakes or civets. This new coronavirus is different from the MERS outbreak in 2012. Seasonal coronaviruses are also circulating in Russia along with other respiratory viruses.
