Logging bans fail to halt rapid cloud forest destruction in Kenya
Forest degradation in the Taita Hills, Kenya, is worsening despite efforts to protect the cloud forest. Satellite images show that natural forest cover has decreased, while exotic tree plantations and bushland have increased. Logging bans have led to less planting of indigenous trees, hindering forest recovery. To save the remaining natural forest, local communities need to be educated on its importance and encouraged to plant native tree species in their woodlots. Involving locals in forest management decisions and sharing benefits from forest resources can help sustainably conserve the cloud forest in the Taita Hills.
