Mangrove forests outshine oil palm plantations in bird diversity.
Bird diversity was compared between mangrove forests and oil palm plantations in Malaysia. The study found that mangrove forests had higher species richness and diversity compared to oil palm plantations. Threatened bird species were mostly found in mangrove forests. Both habitats shared many bird species, with omnivorous, insectivorous, and carnivorous birds being the most common. Point counts and acoustic sampling were equally effective in identifying bird species in both habitats. Point counts are recommended for oil palm plantations, while either method can be used in mangrove forests.
