Deforestation and urbanization accelerating carbon emissions in Chesapeake Bay region
Land-use changes in the Chesapeake Bay area were studied using new data from 2001 to 2011. Forests decreased, but developed lands increased. Overall, carbon storage in the region increased due to forests absorbing carbon. However, urbanization and agriculture caused carbon loss. The new data showed higher carbon emissions and wood product harvests compared to previous estimates. This detailed land-use data helps us better understand how human activities impact carbon levels in ecosystems over time.
