Coastal communities struggle to adapt as sea levels rise, lack resources and capacity
Local coastal areas in the US are adapting to rising sea levels. A national survey of 231 coastal localities found that they are focusing more on planning for adaptation than actually taking action. They prefer protection and accommodation strategies over managed retreat. These areas have medium to low adaptive capacity, with weak elements like leadership and funding. Localities with higher adaptive capacity are implementing more adaptation measures. This research shows that building local adaptive capacity can improve coastal resilience to sea-level rise.
