Invasive plants evolving in Europe fail to thrive back home.
Invasive plant species in Europe can evolve to grow bigger and stronger, but this doesn't help them back in their native habitats. Scientists studied Solidago gigantea plants from North America and Europe in common garden experiments. They found that plants from Europe grew much better in Europe, while plants from North America did better in North America. However, when grown with native North American plants in a greenhouse, there was no difference in competitiveness between the two groups. This suggests that Solidago gigantea may have evolved to thrive in Europe, but this advantage doesn't carry over to its native environment.
