New study reveals camel-to-human transmission of deadly MERS-CoV virus.
Human coronaviruses can cause serious illnesses like severe pneumonia and multi-organ failure. Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) emerged in 2012 from camels in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The virus can spread from camels to humans, but not easily between humans. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for MERS-CoV yet. To control its spread, it's important to regulate camel movement, screen and isolate infected camels, and educate the public about the risks, especially in regions where unpasteurized camel milk is consumed. More research is needed to understand how MERS-CoV spreads and to implement effective control measures.
