Late tillers in wheat reduce plant performance under drought stress conditions.
The study looked at how nonproductive tillers affect wheat plants under stress. They tested different treatments on two wheat varieties in greenhouse experiments. They found that under drought stress, having too many tillers can hurt plant growth. Removing late tillers didn't help high-tillering wheat, but did improve grain weight in low-tillering wheat. This suggests that in stressful conditions, it's better for wheat plants to focus on fewer tillers to produce bigger grains.
