Boosting Shallot Seed Yield and Flowering with Vernalization and GA3
The researchers wanted to improve the flowering and seed yield of a shallot variety called Bima. They did this by chilling the seed bulbs and treating them with a plant hormone called GA3 before planting. In lowland areas, chilling the seed bulbs for 30 days increased the number of flowers and seeds produced. In highland areas, the same chilling process also improved flowering and seed yield. If chilling wasn't possible, soaking the seed bulbs in GA3 for an hour helped increase flower and seed production. The seeds produced in both lowland and highland areas had high germination rates.
