New modeling system improves accuracy of storm event simulations.
The researchers used a computer model to study how rainfall and water movement in the ground are connected in northern China. They compared two ways of running the model: one with just the weather part and one with both weather and water parts. The combined model did better at predicting where and when rain would fall, especially during big storms. It also showed how soil moisture affects where rain goes. Overall, the combined model had more accurate results for rainfall and runoff than the weather-only model.
