Shading cuts solar panel efficiency by up to 99.8%, study finds
Partial shading significantly affects the performance of solar panels. A study investigated different shading types on a mono crystalline PV module. Horizontal string shading had the most negative impact on efficiency, while cellular and vertical shading were less severe. Power losses were highest with horizontal shading (99.8%), followed by cellular (66%) and vertical shading (56.8%). Using transparent materials for shading also reduced power output, with a 20% increase in shading area leading to a 44.94-52.4% decrease in power compared to no shading conditions.
