The Madden-Julian Oscillation affects European weather patterns by influencing different flow patterns called Grosswetterlagen (GWL). These GWL regimes can be linked to the four main European weather regimes and show synoptic details. Some GWL regimes change significantly 10-15 days after certain phases of the MJO, while others remain unaffected. This connection between the MJO and GWL regimes can help improve sub-seasonal weather forecasting by understanding how the MJO influences the atmospheric flow over Europe.
