New wheat management techniques boost yields and reduce lodging risks.
The researchers studied ways to reduce lodging and increase grain yield in irrigated spring wheat in Australia. They tested plant growth regulators, nitrogen application timing, row spacing, and sowing date with different wheat varieties. They found that using plant growth regulators improved grain yield in well-irrigated fields with high nitrogen levels. Narrow row spacing was best for grain yield in low lodging environments. The timing of nitrogen application affected yield differently for short and long-duration wheat varieties. Lodging-resistant long-duration varieties had more stable yields and benefited from early sowing. Further research is needed to find the best management strategy for new wheat varieties.
