New research reveals key to safe disposal of high-level nuclear waste.
Scientists studied how glass used to store nuclear waste at the Savannah River Site behaves when it cools down in canisters. They wanted to see what crystals form in the glass during this process. They tested seven different types of glass and found out what types of crystals were present in each one. They also checked how well the glass held up under certain conditions to make sure it's safe for long-term storage.
