Invasive European Reed Outcompetes Native Plants in Freshwater Marshes.
The study compared the root depth and below ground biomass of European Reed invading a freshwater marsh with uninvaded areas. They found that invaded sites had more below ground biomass, but the root depth was similar between invaded and uninvaded areas. The researchers used water depth to predict below ground biomass, but not root depth. Other factors like soil type and organic soil depth may influence root depth.
