Glacial river sediment yields underestimated by up to 20%: study.
Sediment cores from a Norwegian lake were studied to estimate sediment yields over a 25-year period. By comparing sediment core analysis with direct measurements of sediment transport in the river, researchers found that around 200,000 tons of sediment were deposited in the lake and delta. The study showed a discrepancy of 4-20% between the two methods, likely due to challenges in measuring water discharge in the glacier meltwater river. Overall, sediment cores can help improve long-term sediment yield estimates, but caution is needed when interpreting data from single years.
