New soil classification system revolutionizes agriculture in Sri Lanka's Dry Zone!
Rainfall in Sri Lanka affects soil formation, leading to different soil types in Wet, Intermediate, and Dry zones. The Dry zone has soils from erosional surfaces, coastal plains, and flood plains. There are 54 soil series in the Dry zone out of 118 identified. Each soil series is classified using Soil Taxonomy and World Resource Base (WRB-FAO) legend. The WRB classification is used for more detailed classification. The 1972 classification's local names for Great Soil Groups are also provided. One benchmark soil series is described for each physiographic grouping in a given climatic zone, with color photographs of the landscape and soil profile.
