New research reveals errors in estimating crop productivity with current methods.
Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and photosynthetic efficiency in senescent crops have a nonlinear relationship. The study found that the SIF yield is not directly related to the efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) in these crops. This is due to the changing efficiency of PSII throughout the day and the impact of respiration on photosynthesis. These findings suggest that estimating photosynthesis in senescent crops using SIF measurements may lead to errors.
