Soil and Microbes Reveal Key to Nutrient Limitation in Fragile Ecosystems.
The study looked at how different types of plants and the shape of the land affect the nutrients in the soil and in tiny soil organisms in the Loess Plateau in China. They found that the soil and soil organisms had more carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus on the north-facing slopes and backslope areas. The type of plants had a bigger impact on the nutrients in the soil and soil organisms than the shape of the land. In the steppe zone, the nutrients in the soil organisms were very consistent. The ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus in the soil organisms could help us understand if there are enough nutrients in the ecosystem.
