High nitrogen fertilizer rates lead to serious soil nitrate leaching.
The study looked at how different amounts of nitrogen fertilizer affected soil nitrate levels in a wheat and maize rotation system. They found that higher nitrogen levels led to more nitrate accumulation in the soil, especially at deeper levels. This can cause nitrate leaching, which can contaminate groundwater. The optimal nitrogen application rate for balancing crop yield and soil nitrate accumulation was found to be 180 kg·hm-2.
