Mutant tomato plants with reduced chlorophyll levels struggle with photosynthesis.
A tomato mutant with yellow leaves (Y55) was studied to see how it differs from normal tomato plants. The mutant had lower chlorophyll levels and struggled with photosynthesis, affecting its growth. This was caused by a block in the production of a key chlorophyll precursor. The mutant's leaves had fewer pigment molecules, which slowed down photosynthesis and plant development.
