Permafrost thaw in Canadian peatlands due to climate change is a big concern. Scientists studied subfossil mites in peat profiles to track permafrost history. They found two mite species that can indicate when permafrost formed and melted in the past. This method can reveal permafrost periods that plant fossils alone cannot show.
