New cowpea varieties in Uganda promise higher yields and stability.
Researchers in Uganda studied 30 cowpea genotypes in different environments to see how well they grew. They found that the environment had the biggest impact on grain yield, followed by genotype and genotype-environment interaction. The genotypes Ayiyi, WC64, and ALEGIxACC2 were the most stable and high yielding, while G36, G3, G32, and G14 were also stable but didn't outperform the checks. These findings can help in selecting the best cowpea lines for further testing and potential release as new improved cultivars.
