Revolutionizing Rice Farming: New Method Doubles Yield, Boosts Food Security.
Rice farmers in Kenya need to improve their crop yields to feed the growing population. A study compared traditional flooded rice farming with a new method called System of Rice Intensification (SRI). SRI involves planting rice seedlings closer together and at a younger age. The SRI method resulted in more tillers per square meter and higher seed yields per plant compared to traditional flooding. Planting rice seedlings at 8-11 days old and spacing them 20cm apart produced the highest seed yield per hectare. This shows that using SRI can increase rice production by improving plant growth and root development.
